First of all, I want to explain exactly why I decided to write about 5 Most Anticipated Books on My Reading List today. So, I have stated this several times on my blog, but in case there are any newcomers here (welcome! :>), I just wanted to restate the fact that I joined Book Club this year, where we will be reading one book per month until the start of next school year.

Today, I will be showing you the 5 books that I am the most excited to read through 2021-2022.

So, let’s get started! ✨

Jinxed by Amy McCulloch

The Golden Compass meets the digital age! When a coding star enters an elite technology academy, she discovers a world of competition, intrigue, and family secrets—plus a robotic companion that isn’t what it seems.

Lacey Chu is a girl who codes. She has always dreamed of working as an engineer for MONCHA, the biggest tech firm in the world and the company behind the “baku”—a customizable “pet” with all the capabilities of a smartphone. But when Lacey is rejected by the elite academy that promises that future, she’s crushed.

One night, Lacey comes across the broken form of a highly advanced baku. After she repairs it, the cat-shaped baku she calls Jinx opens its eyes and somehow gets her into her dream school. But Jinx is different than any other baku she’s ever seen…He seems real.

As Lacey settles into life at school, competing with the best students in a battle of the bakus that tests her abilities, she learns that Jinx is part of a dangerous secret. Can Lacey hold on to Jinx and her dreams for the future?

Commentary: Since I am learning to code, as well, I think this book sounds super awesome and exciting. I love books that contain lots of adventure and mystery and this novel sounds very action-packed (which I love).

The Unteachables by Gordon Korman

The Unteachables are a notorious class of misfits, delinquents, and academic train wrecks. Like Aldo, with anger management issues; Parker, who can’t read; Kiana, who doesn’t even belong in the class—or any class; and Elaine (rhymes with pain). The Unteachables have been removed from the student body and isolated in room 117.

Their teacher is Mr. Zachary Kermit, the most burned-out teacher in all of Greenwich. He was once a rising star, but his career was shattered by a cheating scandal that still haunts him. After years of phoning it in, he is finally one year away from early retirement. But the superintendent has his own plans to torpedo that idea—and it involves assigning Mr. Kermit to the Unteachables.

The Unteachables never thought they’d find a teacher who had a worse attitude than they did. And Mr. Kermit never thought he would actually care about teaching again. Over the course of a school year, though, room 117 will experience mayhem, destruction—and maybe even a shot at redemption.

Commentary: I really enjoy stories like this: some unlikely students are paired with an unlikely teacher. This format is so interesting in both books and movies, as the teacher and students are discovering things in a new light, and changing for the better. Not only that, but it sounds really funny, as well. A little comedy doesn’t hurt anyone, right?

Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott

Little Woman is the classic story about four sisters: tomboy and writer Jo, responsible Meg, kind music-lover Beth, and the slightly spoiled youngest, Amy. The book is a coming-of-age story that follows them as manage life while their father is away in a war.

Commentary: I have heard such good comments about this book, and it sounds super encouraging and has good representation of strong female figures, which I love to see in literature.

Cleo Porter and the Body Electric by Jake Burt

In a future forever changed by a pandemic, a girl survives in total isolation.

A woman is dying. Cleo Porter has her medicine. And no way to deliver it.

Like everyone else, twelve-year-old Cleo and her parents are sealed in an apartment without windows or doors. They never leave. They never get visitors. Their food is dropped off by drones. So they’re safe. Safe from the disease that nearly wiped humans from the earth. Safe from everything. The trade-off?

They’re alone. Thus, when they receive a package clearly meant for someone else–a package containing a substance critical for a stranger’s survival–Cleo is stuck. As a surgeon-in-training, she knows the clock is ticking. But people don’t leave their units.

Not ever. Until now.

Commentary: This book actually takes place in the future, which I think is really interesting. It also caught my eye for what seems to be lots of adventure (in the cover). I’m really excited that it takes place in a pandemic, which is super similar to COVID.

Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper

Melody, the huge-hearted heroine of Out of My Mind, is a year older, and a year braver. And now with her Medi-talker, she feels nothing’s out of her reach, not even summer camp. There have to be camps for differently-abled kids like her, and she’s going to sleuth one out. A place where she can trek through a forest, fly on a zip line, and even ride on a horse! A place where maybe she really can finally make a real friend, make her own decisions, and even do things on her own—the dream! 

By the light of flickering campfires and the power of thunderstorms, through the terror of unexpected creatures in cabins and the first sparkle of a crush, Melody’s about to discover how brave and strong she really is.

Commentary: I was so obsessed with the prequel of this book, Out of my Mind, which I was able to read last year. Since I loved it so much due to its heartfelt and detailed events, I expect nothing less of the sequel!
