Living is a Blessing – Words of Wisdom #18

Ecclesiastes 6:9 -- New Living Translation (NLT)
Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.

You know, a lot of people say to be thankful for the “simple things.” Like the fact that we have food to eat, that our bodies are functioning properly, and that we woke up this morning. Those events that occur everyday that some people take for granted. And while we should be thankful for every blessing in our lives, I think we should find another word to describe these everyday events; because the thing is, each of them are anything but simple.

Think about it; our house could have set on fire last night, turning all of our food into ashes, but it didn’t. We could have had a heart attack at any moment, but we didn’t. We could have died in our sleep last night or any night before it, but we didn’t.

When we really sit down and think about how quickly blessings can be taken away from us, it’s easier to understand just how miraculous every second of life truly is. And it’s all thanks to our Heavenly Father who keeps us safe in the palm of his hands.

So, you may be wondering what the purpose is behind this message. I have several responses to answer just that.

  • The things that do (and don’t) occur everyday are not simple; instead, they are miracles.
  • It’s easy to take everyday aspects of life for granted until they are stripped away.
  • Enjoy each of life’s miracles, because no second on this Earth is promised.

In short, just about everything around us (and NOT around us) is a blessing in one way or another. God has been good to us in an uncountable amount of ways. And if we take the time to look, they aren’t hard to find. Even though it has it’s joys and trials, life in itself is a miracle. That’s why I thank God every morning for letting me see a new day.

After all, we never know which one will be our last.

Have a blessed day everybody! See y’all later! ♡

Can’t Get a Dog? Why Not Get a Betta Fish?

In elementary school, I remember desperately wanting a dog of my own. The media makes the impression that cats and dogs are the “ideal” companions. You can snuggle with them, play with them, walk with them, etc. And while it’s true that they can be really good pets, they can also require a lot of maintenance. Besides, there are many other animals that are just as worthy as belonging to a family.

In case your parents haven’t given into your begging to get you a dog–or you’re just a person wanting something that won’t require as much to take care of–I have a great recommendation for the perfect pet for you: a betta fish!

This is Peace, my betta fish! We’ve had him for approximately 4 months, now!

It’s pretty understandable if you are a little hesitant about this decision–some people don’t even consider fish “pets” at all. They pay no attention to their owners except when they have food in their palm, not to mention they can’t give affection. At one point in my life, I thought this, as well. But as an owner of three betta fish, I have come to tell you that these stereotypes are anything but correct when it comes to bettas. In fact, they’re almost like dogs in fish bodies.

Here is some of the information that I know about bettas–based on both my experience and research–to help all possible future owners of this elegant species. Let’s get started!

About Bettas

Betta fish, also named siamese fighting fish, are omnivores who eat insects and larvae in the wild. You can feed them pellets, fish flakes, freeze-dried, and live foods while fasting them up to one day each week. Adult bettas grow up to 3 inches long, and they live from about 2-5 years, although the longest a betta fish has lived in captivity is 9 years.

Bettas need a tank of at least 3-5 gallons in order to have enough space to swim. This applies to all species except the King Betta Fish, which need a tank of at least 6-10 gallons due to their larger size. Bettas must either be housed alone or with a tank-mate of a compatible species–not their own–due to their territorial nature around other bettas and fish with long tails.

Why are Betta Fish Good Pets?

1. Affordability

One common assumption that is true about bettas (like most fish) is that they are fairly affordable to keep happy. All we need to maintain Peace’s tank is bottled purified water, a heater to keep the temperature of his water just above 80 degrees, a filter to keep his water clean, his food pellets, liquid prime to rid the tank of harmful bacteria, and some test strips to make sure the water PH remains at 7. All of our supplies that we bought when we brought Peace home hasn’t run out, proving how affordable and fairly low maintenance Bettas truly are.

2. Bettas are loyal

If I am sitting on the couch or another spot in the living room–where Peace’s tank is located–he will watch me as long as I’m within his eyes reach. Not to mention he gets excited whenever I come up to his tank. Similar to dogs, bettas tend to be very loyal to their owners. The more time you spend with them, the more inseparable you become.

3. You can teach Bettas a multitude of tricks

Within about a week, me and my mother were able to teach Peace how to eat on top of his leaf hammock; now, he already knows where to go once we open the tank to feed him his lunch. Occasionally, we even let a ping pong ball float at the water’s surface as Peace playfully pushes it around with his head. Betta owners have even taught their fish to jump or swim through hoops, jump up to get their food, and more! Betta fish are very intelligent, which allows them to be fast learners as you teach them new tricks.

4. Each Betta has their own personality

Betta fish come in a variety of colors and patterns, which makes them what I believe to be one of the most beautiful fish species in the world. And just like their appearances vary, their personalities do, as well. While my former betta girl, Easter, was a little more calm and reserved, my second betta Joyous was rambunctious and playful. Peace on the other hand, is really sweet. But he’s also really inquisitive, and he had to explore every nook and cranny of his tank before he really got cozy. Every single betta fish takes time to get to know, just like any other pet.

I had so much fun talking about my experiences as a betta owner: each of my bettas were such a blessing to me and my family, so I always enjoy sharing what I’ve learned about them in the process with my followers.

7 Helpful Hacks for Holding Yourself Accountable

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, and then bailed on it at the last minute? The hard truth is, most people have done just that at least once in their life. And while sometimes things come up in our lives that are out of our control, other times there is simply a lack in accountability.

Today I have made a go-to guide specifically for anyone who is looking to hold themselves more accountable. Even if we do consider ourselves responsible people, there is always room to grow in terms of following through with those tasks on our to-do lists that we’ve set aside for the future.

What are we waiting for? Let’s get started! ♡

1. Keep an “I can do it” mindset.

Before we get into the real work to reach our goal, we need to make sure that we have the correct mindset. Procrastination can come from a lack of willpower or a fear of the unknown. In order to face the fear of failure, try to maintain the mental belief that you can and will achieve your goal. When we are mentally in check, we are setting ourselves up for success on our journey.

2. Tell someone who you trust about your goals.

Okay, so maybe you want to loose 10 pounds in a month. But if nobody knows about it, it’s perfectly fine if you don’t hit it? Right? While whether or not others are aware of our goal should not hinder our drive to succeed, it’s a lot harder to bail on an aspiration when someone who we trust knows exactly what we want to do and our deadline to do so. Not only is a good support system motivation, but they also are a source for people who are willing to hold you accountable for your actions.

3. Write down your goals.

Through the process of reaching our goals, it can be easy to forget exactly what we wanted to accomplish, in the first place. As your affirmation to yourself of what you will achieve, write each of your goals down and store the note in a place where you spend the majority of your time.

4. Review your progress

While some goals may be reachable within a day or even a week, others can be more long-term. In these scenarios, it is a good idea to review what you have been doing to reach your goal once a week. A technique such as this can help prevent you from becoming discouraged as you notice yourself inching towards your goal between each review.

5. Constantly remind yourself your “why”

Just as we should keep in mind what our goals are, we also want to remember why we want to achieve them. Every productive goal should be set for a reason; a desire to grow, change, or do something new. Whatever the purpose is behind your goal needs to stay consistent as you work to accomplish it in order to serve as your drive towards success. During the planning process, make sure that your “why” is a point that you address to avoid any confusion later on.

6. Remember; progress is a process

The truth is, there are some goals that simply cannot be reached overnight. Sometimes there are little things in life that force us to take a break. And others times, the goals that we set require months or even years of work to achieve. As long as we never stop working towards where we want to go in life, we are still making progress; and that’s what matters most.

7. Celebrate every victory–the large and small.

One of the largest mistakes that many people make is that they are too hard on themselves. While we should be accountable towards reaching our goals, we mustn’t forget to give ourselves a pat on the back as we take small steps to victory. After all, a journey isn’t complete without its destinations.

Accountability is a superpower that we can all obtain; all we need is use appropriate planning, determination, faith, and confidence, and we can do whatever we set our minds to. So never forget to keep that winning positive mindset. Because the truth is, sometimes the only one who stops us from reaching our goals is our “me, myself, and I.”

How my family stays hydrated . . . | National Hydration Day

Although we’ve all heard it more than once in our lives, hydration is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Even though many people don’t like the taste of water, it provides people of all ages with the energy that we need to get through each day. And as a result, our bodies can only go about three days without any water.

Yesterday I spoke about self-care habits to benefit our mental health; a subject that I consider extremely important. However, this still doesn’t hide the fact that our physical well-being is just as important. And one of the most important ways to keep our bodies healthy is . . . you guessed it: drink water!

In honor of National Hydration Day–and to spread awareness about the importance of hydration—I thought that I would show you all how my family keeps water in our systems. Let’s get started!

You may recognize these bottles as the famous sports drink–Gatorade. Believe it or not. this is only what we have in our storage closet: that doesn’t include what we have in our fridge or island cabinets. After COVID-19 started, Goodmommy began to stock up on water, Gatorade, and other necessities. And boy has it come in handy! Our favorite flavors are Fruit Punch, Strawberry Lemonade, Strawberry Watermelon, and Passion Fruit.

Fun fact: water is the main ingredient in all Gatorade. Plus, the brand is so popular because it keeps you hydrated, despite the large variety of delicious flavors. Overall, Gatorade is an option for people who don’t like the taste of water, put still want a beverage that is healthy for their physical health.

However, we should always keep in mind that drinks like Gatorade and Powerade should never serve as replacements for pure water, since that is always the best option, especially for those trying to adjust to a healthier lifestyle.

My family also keeps multiple cases of purified water handy at all times–both for everyday life and in the unlikely occurrence of an emergency. Sure, sports drinks may taste good, but there’s nothing like a refreshing, ice cold class of water; especially on a hot summer day!

Some easy helpful tips for staying hydrated are;

  • Keep reminders around the house to drink more water (sticky notes, images, motivational words, etc.)
  • Buy a cup that measures the amount of water that you need to drink each hour.
  • Incorporate fruits and vegetables (strawberries, lemons, cucumbers, etc.) into your water to give it some flavor.
  • Carry a water bottle with you when you go out of the house.
  • Eat foods that contain large amounts of water–especially fruit!

7 Daily Self-Care Habits to Help You Feel Your Best

Over the last year, I feel as though incorporating self-care into my daily routine became more important for me. So much so that finding small ways to be kind to myself throughout the day has become natural.

Self-care is a necessity for anyone, no matter what age or gender. And while we all take care of ourselves in different ways, I think we should do so on a regular basis.

I am a strong believer that not only can self-care be fun, but also have a substantial effect on how you think and live. Due to its importance, I have listed some simple habits–most of which I do myself–that you can incorporate into your everyday routine to help you feel like your best self.

1. Wash your face in the morning.

A substantial amount of bacteria gets attached to our skin every 24 hours. And while some bacteria actually protects our skin, others types may lead to clogged pores, a buildup of oil, acne, and a multitude of other issues. This is why taking a damp, warm towel or a facial wipe that includes ingredients that will moisturize your skin should be included in everyone’s morning routine.

2. Eat more meals in smaller portions.

While we may be tempted to eat half of tonight’s dinner in one sitting, many scientists believe that it is best to eat more, smaller meals. Not only will it prevent you from getting hungry as frequently throughout your day, but it also constantly provides your body with nutrients. This then instantly boosts your metabolism, making your body and mind alike more optimistic and energetic.

3. Keep your space organized.

The space that we are surrounded in every day makes a difference in our mental clarity. For example, most of us would probably feel more at peace in a house where everything is put in a designated place rather than one where objects are randomly scattered across the floor. Space organization is everything when it comes to self-care! So a good idea is to pick a room in your home–or a digital option such as your liked Videos or emails–and organize it. A clean space is a huge step forward to a clean mind.

4. Unplug from social media for a day.

As a person who is practically inseparable from her phone and computer, I understand that this can be much harder said than done; especially when trying to make it a habit. While unplugging isn’t something that I do often, every now and again I will take a day off of my electronics. And it can really help to clear your mind off of all the “noise” that comes with social media. The next day, I return to it feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, in a sense.

5. Have a 3-minute breathing session.

There are times where we all need to sit still and take some deep breaths. I find this tip especially helpful for those who feel stressed or have anxiety, as it helps calm you down within a short amount of time. However, even if you don’t have any major events going on in your life, a 3-minute session of deep breaths can be very beneficial to your emotional health.

6. Laugh as often as possible.

In my house, this isn’t so much a tip; more of just regular life. My family knows how to have tons of fun together, so we are just about always laughing. However, studies have shown that while the average 4-year-old laughs up to 300 times a day, most 40-year-olds laugh as little as 4 times daily. Laughing produces the “happy” chemical named endorphins, the ultimate hormone for feeling your greatest.

7. Create a ‘positive vibes playlist’.

Listening to music is like a therapy to most people. It’s like that safe haven whenever you need to clear your thoughts or relax or have a little “me time.” A great idea if you are a music lover is to create a playlist of all the songs that never fail to make you smile. This way, whenever you need to take a little break, you can go to your playlist and feel the good vibes.

As a blogger, self-care posts are some of the most wholesome to write. I really enjoy helping people feel like their best self as they live their best life, and I hope that these self-care habits will help you make the most of your daily routine.

Summer Solstice | A Haiku in Honor of Summer

First day of summer
Sun sits lofty aloft
The glistening sea
-- A Haiku "Summer Solstice" written on June 21, 2022 by Princess Q'Zion. All Rights Reserved.

Welcome, everyone to the first–and longest–day of summer! Although a majority of us have already been enjoying the “summer experience” after another school year ended, today is the beginning of the real summer fun.

Today the Earth orbits the Sun at a specific angle, making the large star appear at the lowest or highest point in the sky. Not only is it really beautiful–making it the perfect opportunity for selfies–but its also the start of road trips, family gatherings, visits to the beach, leisurely bike rides, county fairs, and all the other amazing elements of the season of summer.

So I wanted to ask you guys, what are your plans for this spectacular time of year? Traveling across the world? Writing a novel? Eating some hot dogs with your family? Sleeping in at home? There are so many things to do–the list is pretty much never-ending. Feel free to share some of your goals for this summer and/or some things on your summer bucket list in the comments. I would love to hear from everybody!

Thank you so much for reading, and I will see you all next time! Have a happy summer solstice! ♡

Have you ever had an ice cream soda?

As I stated in an earlier post, ice cream is one of the best desserts to have in the summer. But, what about beverages? While water or an energy drink like Gatorade are the best options, soda is one of the most well-known drinks for summer gatherings or road trips around town.

A scoop of ice cream or a can of soda can make for an occasional sweet treat underneath the rays of the sun . . . so could you imagine what they would taste like together? Ice cream sodas, also dubbed ice cream floats, are just the right mix of sweet and savory—perfect for summer time. And National Ice Cream Soda Day is the perfect opportunity to try one if you never have before.

Here is a “Fanta Ice Cream Float” made of orange Fanta soda and vanilla ice cream. You can check out the recipe and make it yourself by clicking on the image.

I remember drinking a root beer float (Root Beer soda with vanilla ice cream) once back in early elementary school while I went to school in person, and I remember really liking the different yet delectable combination. While vanilla is the standard flavor of ice cream to infuse with soda, there are so many ways to be creative with this dessert–no soda is off limits!

Fun, fresh and bursting with variety, an ice cream float is the perfect way to indulge in a little something sweet during scorching summer days.

LET’S CHAT~I’m curious, have you ever tasted (or heard of) an ice cream soda? If you have, what’s your favorite flavor of soda to incorporate in your floats? And if not, what flavor would you like to try, in the future (if any)?

Have a beautiful and blessed day everybody! See you next time! ♡

Happy Father’s Day ♡

On the third Sunday of June, people in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada celebrate Father’s Day. A day to show our appreciation for the fathers and father-like figures who are present in their lives.

A father’s job is to love, protect, discipline, empathize with, and provide open arms to his children. The men in our lives teach us strength, love, forgiveness, and friendship. And without our fathers’s love and guidance, many of us wouldn’t be who we are today. Today is a chance for us to thank our dads for every sacrifice that they made to give us the lives that they never had.

Today, I wrote an original poem named “Father of Mine” to celebrate this special day and thank fathers around the world. I hope you all love it as much as I did! ♡

You’ve been my rock, and kept me strong
Sacrificed a thousand times
You never left when I did wrong
It's hard to believe you're the father of mine

Ever since my birth
Our bond was set in stone
Your voice is a reminder
That I’ll never be alone

You’re not just my father
But you’re also my friend
Through thick and thin, both losses and wins
You’ve stayed true until the end

And even when you’re miles away
You’re still right by my side
The wisdom still resides in me
From my everlasting guide

I’ve wondered a thousand times
Does anyone have a father like mine?
But all I need to do
Is look at you
And I realize

You’re a one of a kind design

— “Father of Mine” by Princess Q’Zion, written on June 19th, 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Once again, fathers are a blessing in our lives–both our earthly and Heavenly Father–and I thank God for not only His guidance, but for that of every single father that He has used to give us instruction, strength, and love. And I hope that everyone was able to show some love to their “father of mine” today.

Happy Father’s Day, and I will see you all next time! ♡

Observing Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

Hello, beautiful people! I’m Q’Zion, and welcome or welcome back to my blog! ♡

As you all know, there are a bunch of holidays that many of us celebrate each year; Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Valentine’s, and New Year’s are just a few examples. And while those are all great, there is one holiday in particular that was recently made a national holiday due to a bill signed by Joe Biden, coming into effect on June of 2021. That holiday is Juneteenth. And today, I’m going to tell you all what it’s all about.

What is Juneteenth?

In short, Juneteenth–a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth”–is a holiday celebrating the freedom of the last African slaves in the United States on June 19, 1865, over two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Not only is it a mark of the end of slavery within our country, but also the freedom of African-Americans. This year, it just so happens to be shared with Father’s Day, which falls on the third Sunday of June.

Why should we celebrate it?

Even though Juneteenth is considered a national holiday, most Americans know little to nothing about it. This percentage includes some African-Americans, like myself. I believe Juneteenth is a holiday that should be observed and celebrated by American citizens of all nationalities and ethnic identities. Here are some reasons why.

1. We need to learn the good and bads of our nation’s history

While slavery was an unfourtunate element of the history of the United States, it is important that we know about what slaves went through before they were freed, their struggle to gain all of their natural rights, and the people who helped make African-American freedom a reality.

2. To help fight for equality

While Black Americans are now free from slavery, we are still constant victims of police brutality, discrimination due to the color of our skin or the way we dress our hair, higher chance of imprisonment, and higher employment rates. Our world has come a long way from its past, but racism is still a reality among some. Juneteenth gives us a chance to fight for equality for ALL human beings.

3. The freedom of slaves affects every American

As soon as the last African-American slaves were freed, it was a step forward to a more understanding, anti-racist, and fair country and world. Even after they gained their freedom, our black ancestors still struggled to gain all of their legal rights as American citizens. And many of us still struggle in today’s world. But with every peaceful protest, campaign, and usage of other personal platforms to spread awareness about Juneteenth, we can all work together to make our nation better than what it was decades ago.

Hopefully, this helped you all understand what Juneteenth is, as well as its importance. While the world isn’t perfect, we are making progress. And Juneteenth is a reminder that when we work together– in faith, perseverance, and love–there is no goal that our nation can’t achieve.

LET’S CHAT~Had you ever heard of Juneteenth before you read this post? If so, did you learn anything new about it today?

The BEST craft for summer

While it’s always nice to get a break off from school, sometimes it’s difficult to come up with things to do. But what I love about time gaps such as this is that they can increase your creativity, and help you try new things to serve as your entertainment.

Some of you may be wondering what I’ve been doing to spend some of my time during summer break. Yesterday, I mentioned that I got some new Rainbow Loom supplies, including some rubber bands and a hook. But the question still remains; what do I do with them?

Welp, here’s your answer!

Within the past 3 days, I’ve made a total of 12 mini 3D foods out of my rubber bands, all of which I made off of tutorials from the YouTube Channel feelinspiffy, the owner being the original creator of each of these super cute designs. To be honest, these are so fun (and easy) to make that it’s hard to stop once you’ve made it a hobby. Plus, they are so stinking cute!

Believe it or not, at one point I made over 50 of these, all either foods, objects, or characters, but I lost them in a move about two years ago. While I was pretty sad that I lost all of my creations, recently it dawned on me that it gave me a chance to make new “happy foods” that are even better than the first. And summer break is the perfect time to start.

I was a little nervous to get back into one of my old hobbies, since I wasn’t sure if I actually remembered how to use my loom. But I guess looming is one of those things where when you learn it, you’ve got it forever, as it immediately felt as if I never stopped. Thank God that I didn’t have to start from scratch LOL.

Overall, I wanted to post this today for two reasons. First, to show you all that it’s good to use free time as opportunities to use a little creativity. And second, that even when it seems like your work has dissapeared before your eyes, it is never too late to get back up and start again.

Have an amazing rest of your day or night, everyone! I’ll see y’all later! 💖
